A small B.C. community is rallying around the family of a seven-year-old girl killed in a rockslide Monday during a group hike in the mountains north of Vancouver.
Erin Moore was on a hike with her mother, older brother and about a dozen others when she was struck by falling rocks Monday morning on a trail near her home of Lions Bay. She was buried under a boulder the size of a car and first responders were unable to resuscitate her with CPR.
She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Witnesses in the group hike say Moore ran ahead with two other children.
A slope then collapsed without warning and buried the girl in boulders.
Martin Colwell of Lions Bay Search and Rescue says the girl was not close to other hikers at the time of the rockslide, and no one else was injured.
“She was lower down than the others,” Colwell told CTV Vancouver. “I believe they were trying to take some pictures and the slope just gave way while she was under it.”
The incident happened in an area called Lonetree Creek on the Unnecessary Mountain Trail in the mountains near Lions Bay.
Air ambulance and first responders attended the scene, and the girl’s father also arrived to help dig her out from under the rocks.
There were trained nurses among the group of 15 hikers, but CPR was unsuccessful.
Colwell said the trail is relatively new but it’s a “reasonable” hike. He said the collapse likely came due to heavy rains in recent weeks that may have weakened the rock slopes.
Lions Bay Mayor Karl Buhr, a close friend of the victim’s family, said Erin had hiked the same trail at least a dozen times.
“She was a stalwart of the hiking group," he said. "She was a force of nature, that little girl."
Buhr said the Lions Bay community, which is comprised of only about 1,300 residents, is close-knit, and the heartbreaking loss has affected everyone.
“This has had a very wide impact across the board,” he said.
Flags outside the Lions Bay village hall are at half-mast and a makeshift memorial has been placed on the front steps where member of the community have started leaving cards, candles, and teddy bears in memory of the little girl.
No official vigil has been announced.
