President Buhari Is Nigeria’s Problem, Not Its Solution – Wall Street Journal

Nigerian President Muhummadu Buhari writes of building an economic bridge to Nigeria’s future ( The Three Changes Nigeria Needs,” op-ed, June 14).

It’s hard to see how his administration’s inflexibility, lack of vision and reactive approach will achieve this.

Mr. Buhari notes that building trust is a priority for Nigeria. But an anticorruption drive that is selective and focused on senior members of the opposition party creates deep political divisions.

Meanwhile, members of Mr. Buhari’s own cabinet, accused of large-scale corruption, walk free. Seventy percent of the national treasury is spent on the salaries and benefits of government officials, who make upwards of $2 million a year.

As for Mr. Buhari’s ideas to rebalance the economy and regenerate growth, his damaging and outdated monetary policy has been crippling.

The manufacturing sector, essential to Nigeria’s diversification, has been hardest hit, exacerbating an already fast-growing employment crisis.

Foreign investors have started to flee en masse. Mr. Buhari makes only brief mention of the country’s deteriorating security situation.

But security and stability are precursors to economic growth and development.

Boko Haram has been pushed back for now, but little attention is paid to the structural issues that have spurred its rise.

Instead, the Nigerian government has diverted much-needed military resources to the Niger Delta, where rising militancy has reduced Nigeria’s oil production to less than half the country’s capacity, and half the amount required to service the national budget.

Much of these tensions arise from Mr. Buhari’s decision to cut amnesty payments to militants and an excessively hard-line approach in a socially and politically sensitive environment.

Other ethnic tensions are also growing. In the country’s south, protests have been met by a bloody response from the Nigerian military, stoking the fire and galvanizing support for an independent state of Biafra.

Rising tensions could again pose one of the greatest threats to Nigeria’s stability and future.

official statement from Prophet T.B. Joshua on Panama papers

“I was shocked to find a report written in Premium Times claiming that the Panama Papers revealed a shell company called Chillon Consultancy Limited in the British Virgin Islands, allegedly owned by me.
Whoever is involved in this malicious write-up and propaganda with an obvious intent to defame my person and the ministry, remember what the Bible says in Luke 2:34 – “This child is destined to cause the falling and rising of many… and to be a sign that will be spoken against.”
“I am not a businessman and have no business whatsoever. What God has given me is more than enough. I have nothing to do with the Panama Papers. As for me and my family, we shall remain in the vineyard of God.
“Premium Times – do not allow your company to be used. Do not allow your company to stand against God. This is a lie! Take note – this news was written by the same journalist who alleged that I bribed him during the building incident and went to different channels – both local and international – to propagate these fabrications.
Since the building incident, there have been a series of threats towards the ministry and my person by this same journalist, Nicholas Ibekwe, who represents a gang of people.
“After everything that has been done in an attempt to destroy this ministry, this is what he has resorted to. Even the picture used in the write-up is taken from the Mexico Crusade I recently held. It was a crusade I went for, nothing more.
“Do not use the Panama Papers to attack those you have been looking for an opportunity to victimise. This is to show that not everybody alleged in the media to be involved in the Panama Papers is truly involved. My own case is a good example.
“Beware of those using the Panama Papers for fraudulent purposes! This is a very big mistake the fraudsters have made. Those who read this report – take time to do your findings. It is malicious.”
“Note – people are misusing the data in the Panama Papers for fraud to attack innocent people.”

Buhari condemns latest Boko Haram attacks

President Muhammadu Buhari has condemned in the strongest language the latest terrorist attacks on Borno and Yobe communities by the Boko Haram bandits. In a statement issued by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, the president said he was deeply touched by these mindless incidents of violence on innocent people during the month of Ramadan.
According to President Buhari, the terrorists are enemies of everybody, and enemies of humanity everywhere. He explained that no sane people who believe in any god would be destroying the lives of innocent people in cold blood, adding that terrorists don’t represent any religion.
The President said the pattern of their indiscriminate violence against innocent people shows that they represent nothing else but anarchy and devilry. In what appears to be one of his toughest expressions of outrage, President Buhari reminded the terrorists of his uncompromising resolve to tackle them with all the resources at the disposal of his government. “Make no mistake about it: this government is ever determined to discharge its fundamental duty of protecting the lives of its citizens from physical threats from any groups bent on creating chaos, confusion, and on destroying social and economic life of the people”, he further warned. President Buhari who extended his sympathy to the families of the victims, reassured all Nigerians that his government would never tolerate to terrorist blackmail, and that our security forces would confront the Boko Haram bandits to the last man. Describing terrorists as “cowards who lack any moral inhibition and any iota of humanity to reason compassionately” would not find Nigeria a safe haven, because “they would be “hunted down without mercy and compromise.”
He reassured Nigerians that security would be tackled by his administration with vigorous determination. The President, however, advised Nigerian to show more vigilance and be alert to the presence of suspicious people around them, adding that “the terrorists are enemies of religion and humanity.”
He explained that “no true believers in any God would target worshipers, holy places, or people who are fasting and other innocent Nigerians.”

SEE Change: Senate passes a law which legalizes sex with an 11 year old?

When I read the report online a few days ago, I didn't carry it because I didn't believe it. The report claimed that the Nigerian Senate had on Wednesday June 3rd passed a bill that approved prison terms for rapists and anyone who has sex with a child under 11 years old.

That means if the child is above 11, men can have sex with them and face no consequences? Still hard to believe. FFK just reacted to it on Twitter
